Digital Minimalism

It’s ironic that in this era of internet connectivity, we are even more fragmented and disconnected; not only with each other, but with ourselves. To live a life filled with meaning, purpose, and joy, it’s necessary to live out of a deep sense of self — to know and be in touch with our body, spirit, and mind — the whole self.

I am grateful for the time in which we live. The digital tools we possess allow us not only to create magic, but also save lives. But the digital world has a dark side as well. It can be a place to hide. Indeed, our society beckons us to come hide there.

Reading, meditating, writing, walking, yoga, exercising, mindful eating, resting — these are some of the practices that help us go inward to the source of our truest self. They help us ask profound questions which cause us to reflect on what is real and true.

The digital-social world does the opposite. It keeps us trapped in the ego, always casting judgement, always seeking approval, always focused on others. It robs us of our joy and purpose, of knowing our selves.

You can begin a fresh journey of joyful self-discovery today just by mindfully noticing how you spend your time online. Then you can start small by scaling back on social media. And then who knows, maybe you’ll decide to pull the plug on the whole thing. And imagine what that could do for you? Just think of all the time you’ll have for investing in yourself because you are worth it.
