Procrastination

There is no such thing as writer’s block. — Stephen King

Some of us procrastinate more than others, but we all do it. As a hypnotherapist, I’m interested in the subconscious reasons why a person feels scared or paralyzed to grow. Whatever the subconscious mind believes is gained by not moving forward (we call it secondary gain), this is what holds power over you. Remove this subconscious fear or reframe the fear into something positive (it’s really the same thing) and you will find yourself moving again.
So, procrastination is about fear. There is perceived peace and safety in doing nothing and staying right where you are. The fear is the resistance. As author Steven Pressfield writes, “There’s a secret that real writers know that wannabe writers don’t, and the secret is this: It's not the writing part that’s hard. What’s hard is sitting down to write. What keeps us from sitting down is Resistance.”
It can be extremely helpful to get to the root fear, the root resistance. I help my clients do this through hypnosis. Through cognitive work and hypnosis, I also help my clients to make a daily habit of showing up, of doing the work. It’s a daily practice.
The work is rarely that difficult. No matter what it is. No matter what you do. The hard part is showing up to do the work. If you find yourself procrastinating today, the answer is to simply show up and begin. You will be so glad you did.
