As I share with my clients, each of us goes in and out of hypnosis multiple times a day. And what is hypnosis? It’s that moment you seem lost in. Where everything else fades into the background and you become singularly focused on that thought, that idea, that song, that person, that fear, that pain. In that state of hypnosis, you are highly suggestible to what you see and hear. And over time (and it doesn’t take long) those things can change you.

Two of the most important hypnotic times of the day are right when you wake up in the morning and as you are winding down toward sleep in the evening. So a question I ask most of my clients who are struggling with anxiety and fear — what are you watching, reading, listening to right before you go to bed? Because whatever the answer is, that’s what the mind is latching onto as you drift off to sleep. And in your sleep and in your dreams, your body and mind will attempt to do something with the information you gave it, and this will change you.

Murder mysteries, the news, and even shows where the characters are comedically cutting one another down — all of this right before bed — will be taken into your mind as suggestions and they will begin to shape you.

So, practice mindfulness. Wind down your day mindfully, in a way that honors you. Take a bath, drink a cup of tea, write down the great things that happened to you and that you accomplished during the day. Then watch how quickly this will change your attitude and your life.
